Step 1: Size Your Butter

The housing is built to hold exactly one half of an Eastern stick of butter (plus the push block inside). So start by cutting an Eastern stick in half.

Not sure what an Eastern stick is? In the US, butter sticks come in two shapes: Eastern sticks are long and slim (common east of the Rockies), while Western sticks are short and stubby. The Butter Crayon is sized for half an Eastern stick. If you have Western sticks or a European block, use the included Butter Cutter™ below.

Step 2: Load It Up

Slide your half-stick into the housing, on top of the push block. It's sized to fit snugly, so you're ready to go in seconds. Pop the cap on the spreading end when you're done to keep things tidy.

Reach for the Butter Cutter™, included free with every Butter Crayon—think of it as a cookie cutter for butter. Press it through your stick or block to cut a perfect Eastern half-stick. Then gather the leftover shavings, drop them back into the Butter Cutter™, and press them down with the block to shape a second half-stick. Nothing goes to waste.

Step 3: Push & Spread

Press the block up from the base, and the butter rises out the spreading end—ready to use. Then glide it across warm toast, pancakes, corn on the cob, or a hot baking dish. The warmth does the work, so there's no digging into the bread, scraping, or tearing.

  • Let it soften slightly: Butter spreads most smoothly when it's not rock-hard. A few minutes at room temperature makes the glide effortless.
