1. Size your butter. Cut an Eastern stick of butter in half. (Using a Western stick or European block? The included Butter Cutter™ shapes a perfect half-stick from any butter.)

2. Load it up. Slide the half-stick into the housing, on top of the push block.

3. Push & spread. Press the block up from the base and the butter glides out the spreading end — smooth and even on toast, pancakes, hot pans, and baking dishes. No twisting, no torn bread.

Why does it hold half a stick instead of a full one?
Two reasons, both deliberate. A full stick would make the housing long and awkward to hold. And at half-stick length your finger can push the block all the way to the end, so you use every last bit of butter instead of leaving some stranded out of reach.
